What is a plot outline review?

A plot outline review is your first step toward creating a cohesive and compelling narrative. As your editor, I will provide a comprehensive evaluation of your story's structure, focusing on the coherence, pacing, and overall effectiveness of your plot. I'll thoroughly examine your plot's major events, character arcs, and thematic elements to ensure they align seamlessly and contribute to a captivating story. My goal is to identify the strengths and weaknesses in your storyline, suggest improvements for plot points, and highlight any inconsistencies or plot holes that may disrupt the reader's experience. This meticulous analysis will help you refine your story's framework, ensuring it is engaging and well-structured before you dive into writing the full manuscript.

In our collaboration, I will also focus on the development and impact of your key scenes and characters. I will assess whether your scenes effectively advance the plot and develop your characters in a meaningful way. You'll receive insights on which scenes are impactful and which may need more work to fully engage your readers. Together, we'll ensure your story's pacing maintains a steady rhythm that keeps readers invested from beginning to end. By offering you a fresh perspective, I aim to help you uncover potential issues you might have overlooked, ultimately guiding you towards creating a polished and compelling narrative.

What are manuscript evaluations?

Manuscript evaluations are an in-depth assessment aimed at identifying both strengths and weaknesses with key story elements like plot, character development, world-building, and pacing.

During this service, I will read your manuscript multiple times and provide a report with strategic advice to help you refine your manuscript to industry standards and reader expectations. This does not include in-line comments which point out areas for improvement and high-light what has been done well.

This service is best for those who have an incomplete manuscript, who are on a budget and would still like support with big picture story elements, or have worked with developmental editors before and do not need in-line comments to show potential areas to work on.

What is developmental editing?

Developmental editing is also known as substantive editing or story editing.

The first step, after at least one thorough read-through, in a developmental edit is a manuscript evaluation. The evaluation is a review letter highlighting the major story elements of both strengths and weaknesses. The next steps in a developmental edit is going page by page to highlight with in-line comments these areas, giving you clarity and examples from what is included in the manuscript evaluation report.

Developmental editing is a necessary step for authors who want to refine their work and improve their manuscript to appeal to readers, publishers, and agents.

This type of edit is a deep, comprehensive process which looks at the story structure, content, and ways to work on elements such as plot, character arcs, dialogue, world-building and pace.

It does not include copy-editing, line-by-line editing, or proofreading.

When I first started writing my book two years ago, I never imagined that it would get as far as it did. Every draft I wrote felt like a step into the unknown, and I often waited for the other shoe to drop: for me to lose interest, energy, or passion for this craft. After completing my first full manuscript, I sat back exhausted and unsure of what to do next. I knew deep down that there was still work to be done, but I was blinded by the years of effort I had already poured into it.

With Vicki’s guidance, I was able to clearly see the strengths I had woven into my narrative, as well as the specific areas where growth was needed. She is a knowledgeable coach and editor, and I am so glad I trusted her with my art. Her feedback has reignited my passion for writing, and I’m excited to further develop my story and its characters. Vicki also provided me with what seemed like an endless list of resources to support me on this journey. I already have these texts sitting in my Amazon cart and can’t wait to dive back into the work. Vicki is an exceptional developmental editor and coach, with a keen eye for what will make any writer's work truly shine.
